RD Reed valve modification
« on: March 21, 2013, 08:01:25 AM »
Can anyone advise the exact Yamaha reed valve petal that you can fit on standard RD 250/350/400 cages that have the bridge removed?  Thanks for any info :)

good question, I couldn't find one either so I installed YZ125 reed valves in the race bike , needed some mods to the barrels though, I have read on another forum that TDR reed petals will fit but they are very stiff. sorry not much help.

Hi Chris,
I have seen that often but never asked the guys what reeds they used. >:( But some I see looked like the stock pedals.
I have read in a magazine that Boyesen reeds are common for that modify. I am pretty sure that I have a shoot of this magazine article anywhere on my computer.
Cheers Uwe

Hi Uwe and DJ, it seems that the "TDR" reed is actually a special made by an American race specialist, his #34 seems to be the type that fits RD 250/350/400 cages with a single petal and the centre support cut away.  Anybody know a UK/EU seller?  Cheers

Hi,
a german friend has developed reed petals together with a carbon reed manufacturer for this cage modification we talk about. I didn`t knew this. In fact nobody knew this. ;) I got pictures and info this morning shortly before he posted it on the german forum.
The reeds rigidy are based on a petal a well know RD guru(who died a few years ago) done this back in the 80tees and 90tees. My friend had bought the whole stock of the petals back then. As he owns and restored many RD`s he got out of stock and searched for a solution. The petals are now manufactured by a company who do reed petals for many other bikes. But this special petals are build from stronger fibre and tighter weaved fibre to match the characteristics of the glasssfibre reeds of the former RD guru.
They are available now here: http://www.carbon-werkstatt.de/shop/Startseite
But they are not yet on his website that brand new are these infos. Sale price will be 35 Euro + shipping(Registered letter) for both reed blocks.
Here the pictures. First 2 are the reeds from the guru, the other 2 the new ones.

He also has the carbon reeds for all RD`s as replacement for the genuine ones. These cost 26 Euro + shipping.
If I could help someone with purchaseing the parts just ask. Website is only in german. Update for this: I have just seen that his website is partly english. So at least he speaks english. Please refer to the "Heiner Jakob reed petals". He is the guy who developed them with the manufacturer together.
Cheers Uwe

Ron did a 370 conversion for me so I cant comment on just the reeds but the bike runs well but i need to sort my jetting as it is maybe abit rich but atleast it isnt holeing pistons.

I don’t know if this helps but I think you can get these but it’s for a banshee 350 with small mods they fit.

Hi stpierre,
the V-Force reeds are not a close fit. It is needs more than a little grinding. And they are expensive. Friends in germany have done a back to back dyno test with standard versus V-Force on a YPVS. Nearly no difference at all. In my opinion not worth the money.
Cheers Uwe
