MotoGP 2017 Moto2 Moto3 Test Jerez
« on: March 09, 2017, 05:10:10 PM »
Hi Guys,

I'm away from the 350B's for a few days, doing the day job  ::)

Looks like i'm going to have to work again this year  :D

Its when i come to this test, which is the last European test before the season, that i really appreciate what a great job i have  ::)

Although i would still prefer the bikes being 2-strokes, they really are works of art ...

This years KTM Moto3 bike

and this years Kalex Moto2 bike

Only one Brit in Moto3 this year John McPhee (only one in Moto2 too), but there is a new team for him called the 'British Talent Team'  :)

Steve

Any idea how much one of costs nowadays Steve? The idea was originally to make moto3 more affordable than the 125's bet they cost as much or more now!!
Cheers Jim

Hi Jim,

Yep Moto3 is still cheaper than a top 125 bike was, back in the day  8)

The main reason for this is, now the organisers (IRTA) mandate the purchase price and the individual price for every componant from the engine and chasis. So basically Honda/KTM are told the maximum price they can sell them for  :)

Back in the day, the 125's were outragiously expensive, to both lease from the supplier (Honda or Aprillia), and eye wateringly expensive to run. As an example, the 125 engines were rebuilt 6 times per race weekend (basically after every session), and a rebuild was everything stripped down and rebuilt.

Now, the engines are supplied to the teams from IRTA (not KTM/Honda/Mahindra) to make sure they are all the same with no 'specials' for favoured riders. And they have to make 5 engines last the whole season without rebuilds or strip downs, because all the engines are sealed by IRTA before supplying them to teams.

Dont know what the current price is, but i would guess it is around 300,000 Euros.

Another pic, the previous Moto3 Honda with her clothes back on  ::)

That is still a lot of money to find impossible for younger riders without hefty sponsorship/  backing!!

Good job McPhee got a deserved good ride again  ;)

Yep it is a great deal of money  :o

However, the 1/3rd rule applies in MotoGP classes .......

1/3rd  get paid to ride the bikes
1/3rd dont get paid, but dont need to bring money either
1/3 rd have to bring money.

The typical budget needed by a paying rider is around 150,000 Euros

Still a lot of money, but more manageable  :)
