Hi, thought I'd just say hello on behalf of my son and I, now we're paid up members.

We've just bought an imported RD 125 DX ready for his 17th birthday and as a general hack for my kid sister whose new AJS Cadwell is proving less than reliable!

Bit about us, I'm retired from HMForces and maggot is doing joinery at college but is also learning to be a luthier and two stroke smoker!
We've built up a DT50 MX and own a few more bikes which I'll list below if I can suss it out. Computer is still a bit of a strange language for me...

The RD... Its either a 79 or 80 depending on which dating certificate you believe, dvla have it as a 1980 so we'll go with that... We've just bought new points and carb rebuild kits as it runs on both cylinders to start with but rapidly settles down to run on one, which still runs quicker than my sisters AJS!
Its totally unrestored and original but presentable, not for the purest as its obviously an import but that's of little consequence to us really. The original front mudguard has been mullered then straightened by Stevie Wonder so, in the short term will be replaced by something chrome that fits better, perhaps a bumper off a Vauxhall Viva...

So why an RD? I was going to get a cheap Chinese thing that starts everyday but the Cadwell in the family doesn't, the RG125 gamma we have is too far away from being sorted, I saw a really nice air-cooled RD250 at my local meet and that was it, especially as Maggot wanted one too.

We live in New York Lincolnshire and the local bike meet is at our village hall, I'm sure someone on here will be fairly local to us.

I'm not too bad with a set of spanners, a rattle can and brilliant at taking advice and making coffee!

Welcome from another old git!

I have an in-built aversion to new, modern replacement parts such as points, coils, condensers and carb kits - too much cheap crap around. If possible, always buy new genuine Yamaha, or new old stock (nos) by reputable companies like Daiichi. My caveat to this is that it can be very hard to track down new parts for the Teikei (TK) carbs, although I've read that Keihin jets will fit. Anyway, hopefully you'll nail down why it only runs on one pot.

There are some differences between the early and late RD125DX, and the 125s and 200s, so this means that you have to be wary when buying parts - don't believe adverts that say "fits 125 and 200", but check the parts manuals and do your own research first. There are some manuals available for download in the tech section of the forum and post here first if you are unsure of anything.

You think RD's make a nice noise. Our house rattled when the Vulcans flew over 
The flat land around there means you'll be in top gear most of time  . Although I remember my brother putting his scooter in one of the ditches 
The year difference with the registration is usually caused, because the VIN plates on bikes, for example going to the USA would show the date of manufacture which the dating certificate would use. However the DVLA would use the date of on road registration by the dealer.

We had the Haynes book of lies arrive today but now I know we have a manual section we can download, Maggot can do that too!

Mike, yes you're right I was on that straight between my gaff and the petrol station t'other day. My old man was in the RAF but he was at Cranwell and I remember the skies full of Jet Provost's and Vulcans too. These days I have Typhoon and bbmf flying over my place.

I'll have to apologise if I mess up names or repeat myself, I have a brain injury that affects my memory.

Carb wise I was considering a set off a suzuki GT185 any thoughts on that?

Do not use the Keyster carb rebuild kits. About the only thing that is useable is the gasket. Many a thread where people have fitted them then had problems.

Haven't tried this but it did look like the carbs from my son's former Suzuki SB200 would fit the RD200DX but might be a bit too rich for 125. Sure the pattern of carb same as GT185,

Yes Gibbet Nook. Was shocked when my Teacher explained that name. It was because it was a junction in road where they dealt with sheep thieves  .
Gibbet, suspended by chains and nook where they slit their bellies and pulled out intestines. Left to rot for all to see. Those were the days

Gibbet nook, I grew up mainly in Cheshire where Gibbets were fair common sights back in history so I knew roughly what sort of things went on down on that corner Mike!

To the chap in Spilsby, it was obviously ruined with Covid, so last month was a fresh start. There was about 40 bikes of all era's and a few cars too. There's a brew and toilets available and it meets the first Thursday of every month so July 1st is the next one my kid sister has just reminded me.
Once I've got this little RD running something like, I'm going to try and organise a local ride out but I want to talk to the chap who organises the bike meet first as I don't want to tread on toes having only just started getting involved with the scene again.
