Yamaha dt125mx headlight confusion??
« on: November 06, 2023, 07:20:17 PM »
Hi guys
Had my 1980 dt125mx running today for the first time since the rebuild .
All went perfectly apart from I noticed the high beam wasn’t working. I removed the front lense and I
Was shocked to see the bulb was actually built into the lense (or it looks like it to me ) .
Is this correct? I wanted to swap the bulb out but it looks like it’s not possible?
Any help or advice would be great guys , thank you .

Sounds like an American import with sealed beam headlight, my Kawasaki KE175 has the same problem.  If you don't want the oem sealed beam, and I certainly don't on mine, then you'll need a UK headlight, bulbholder, and possibly a UK rim, I think they are bit deeper to allow the W clips to seat.

It seems a funny way to do it , I’ll just have to keep my eye open for a working one , I found one new for £110 but I’m not paying that .
It’s a shame they can’t be repaired somehow

You'll need to do a little detective work vis a vis which UK headlight ring will fit your bowl and which UK light will fit that. Yambits might do a repro part and CMSNL sometimes have new UK/Euro lights - you'll likely need the part number for this, though.

French, German and UK headlights and rings often differ as well.

I understand that, from about 1970 on, it was US law to have a tamper proof (ie sealed beam) headlight so, as previously posted, the majority of US imports have sealed beam headlights.

Saw this while I was investigating: http://www.ladistributionltd.com/category/vehicle-lighting-sealed-beams

I had heard of converting the headlight unit to take a bulb, but I can't find anything about how you do it.

I have seen three types of sealed beam, only one of which lends itself to converting to taking a bulb.

Below is a brief note on how I did mine. It was written in relation to Yam Enduros with a 6v system and no regulator (which is why so many blew!), but there is a chance that you might not get a usable spread of light.

Carefully bend back the five retaining tabs.
Start pulling out the bulb - note, it will need breaking to remove, and then you'll need to clear out all of the glass shards from the lens.
Buy a 6v H4 bulb.
Remove the collar from the H4 bulb (might need gently grinding off).
I think that a 1mm washer is needed, with the inner diameter of a smidge over the diameter of the H4 bulb and an outer diameter of that of the collar on the original, broken bulb - this is needed to seat it in the rubber damper.
Fit the H4 bulb, taking care to align it properly.
Prise the tabs back down.

Make sure that you fit a 6v voltage regulator, or your bulb will just blow again, and the five tabs will only tolerate being bent a few times!

I've got a USA RD200 which had a sealed beam.
I replaced it with one of these a 5.3/4" convertor used on many cars of the period and its LH biased. You need to check that's the right diameter for yours but they do a number of different sizes

Mine had a pilot light
It was tight squeeze in the rim and the W clips had to be fitted upside down from original. The halogen was too powerful for the loom so used standard H4 bulb. To adapt the loom I bought a 90 deg H4 connector which made it more compact to fit in bowl. The colour of the wires is different so you need to work that out.
Best of luck
