Powder coating removal
« on: May 29, 2023, 09:03:30 AM »
Guys,
Has anyone had any luck removing powder coat with gun wash (cellulose thinners), as in soaking in a bath of? I have lots of little parts that need doing DIY. I'm hoping to get the frame chemically dipped.
Not an RD by the way, another side project that I'm working on in tandem with the 350.
Cheers

I considered various ways of getting an aftermarket paint job off my 400C wheels, and in the end went for a hassle free shot blasting - £15 for both wheels.

Hi Al,
A lot of places complain about blasting powder coat off as the shot medium 'bounces' off the surface adding considerably to the time taken to process the parts. I also don't want to entrust small components to a general workshop as guess what, they will loose some parts, guaranteed.
If anyone has contact details for a 'sympathetic' paint stripper supplier that might have industrial gel stripper for sale, please let me know.
Cheers.

I did the same. $50 US for both rims I pulled bearings and masked surfaces myself.

Previous owner had the frame powder coated long before I purchased the project. The powder coating job was dreadful. It looked like the frame and associated parts had been dipped in plastic. To remove the powder coating from the small parts I used a CRC aerosol can of Gasket Stripper. Worked really well. As for the frame I purchased a tin of aviation strength paint stripper. Strong stuff but it works. Paint it on, leave the stripper to do the job, then pressure wash off. A bit tedious. I have just cleaned the frame off and applied a temporary coat of etch primer until I get a chance to have the frame abrasive blasted. The small parts have been beadblasted, etch primed and painted. 105738-0
