Title: Standard exhaust pipes - restore or replace
Post by: matwom on June 10, 2021, 04:24:51 PM
Hi guys ,
I have a RD125 DX 1981
Iv been thinking about ether replacing or restoring my pipes ?
There not in too bad condition but have a few dents here and there ,,,
I may even consider some after market pipes (microns ) ,, not sure where to look for pipes or after market pipes ,, looked on the old eBay but no luck ,,,
I’m thinking it’s gonna cost around £500 to get them both restored and chromed at a ruff guess ( including the down pipes )
Any help on new pipes or micron / after market would be great ,,, thank you

Unless you're building a show pony, Mat, I would leave as is and enjoy the patina!  ;) :D

Are you ok for an original front mudguard?

Any Microns you will find are most likely going to cost the earth and be in need of a re-furb, also you need to be careful they are not for the 200 as they are different but look the same, many don't know what they are selling, and they make little difference to performance anyway, you could get some performance pipes made, there are plenty of pipe builders about these days, but nothing off the shelf AFAIK, and then you open a can of worms with jetting.

As for the front mudguard, rocking horse poo in gold.

I'd just have at what you have there with vinegar and aluminum foil.

They do not supply the downpipes, you have to reuse your existing

I have higgspeed's on mine.
And you might want to consider a fibre glass alternative for the front mudguard.
I used a LC 125 one.

I have Higgspeeds on my RD125A. These retain use of the original down-pipes.
I'm unable to confirm, because the Higgspeed website has changed 'recently', and the old website is incomplete
http://oldsite-higgspeed.com/YAMAHA-PAGE (http://oldsite-higgspeed.com/YAMAHA-PAGE)
http://oldsite-higgspeed.com/NEW-GP-PIPES (http://oldsite-higgspeed.com/NEW-GP-PIPES)
but I'm pretty sure that subsequent to my purchase they started to produce a different style that also replaced the down-pipes.
I wonder if this is the 'GP Style' that is referred to as an option.
If you're interested in going down this route, it may be worthy of a call to them.
cheers

Yes, I thought that too.
What on earth does 'GP Style' actually mean when they don't include a photo?
Not even an explanation.
Interesting if it does mean a one-piece set including downpipes, as they will be the only manufacturer on the market to offer this off-the-shelf.

It's not. No earplugs needed with full face helmet imo. Only good sounds to be heard. With pod filters shoved into the airbox to carb boot and a 100mj it works well on my round tank model and the engine revs freely.  A clean set of stock pipes could do the same I'm sure but I have two clogged sets of them and no interest in cleaning them..  I run premix and that 20% castor oil stuff they always say don't use to make things worse lol.. In any case I like them 👍
