DOT 5 is silicone based. DOT 5.1 is just a modern DOT4. I use DOT 5.1 in every bike I have, no issues. Maxima or Motul. I look for high temp versions (500f+ like Motul) for the race bikes.

Sorry to piggy back on this thread but Gr8uncleal, adding to what you've said here, can I ask at what point did the side panel '250' emblem become a decal? The parts list describes an emblem but I've seen many an 'A' picture sporting 250 decals with go faster stripes (the 250 being in 'A' style, not the plainer 'B' version).
Rubyig - Your acquisition. A beauty to behold by the way.

This could also be the issue with mine then. I will watch this thread and pull mine apart in the spring.

Hi Thanks for your reply
So would this make it a RD250A model? Yes I realise I will need to replace the switchgear as the kill switch is broken, just trying to decide if i buy a used replacement or a new one?
Do you think this is the original tank with the badge (which I must say I do not like at all)?

No, 1973 model is generally referred to as "pre A". Yamaha started suffixing their models with letters in 1974, so 1974 is the A model.

That is the correct tank and badges - they look better with the correct graphics! 1974 and 1975 models didn't have badges, just graphics (albeit different ones).

There is a genuine Yamaha Service Manual for your bike in the Tech Section, although it is listed under DS7 and R5C (1973 RD250/350 is included in this manual).

Slight correction…..  The solid badges were still fitted to A models, graphics replaced them on the B model.

Thanks.  ;)

I was thinking back to the 1974 US models, which I think have graphics only. UK/Euro stuck with the badge and different graphics.

Well, here's what's in the engine. All original. Pistons are marked 1A100 inside. Measure at 64.25. All the gaskets were original except the right jug base gasket - it'd been changed at some time for some reason. Otherwise it does not appear that these cases were ever split before. I probably could have changed the oil and run it the way it was. But now it will get cleaned, new OEM seals and gaskets, new clutch fibers, and maybe a new set of OEM rings if I can find any.

I'm about $2000 into this so far not counting bike cost. OEM parts aren't cheap, frame and a number of parts needed powder coat and cerakote. Haven't torn down wheels yet of course they will need tubes and tires.

I won't know Mally until I remove the heads and barrels, the pistons were definitely Mikita  as they came in boxes from PJ
