Title: The evolution of project X
Post by: RDJames on October 15, 2012, 07:40:30 AM
If it gets a 350cc upgrade.

How about we get a new paint job to go with it

I always liked the idea of mixture from the 1st 250 to the last 400 paint work graphics

Problem is the paintwork is still really good and only done two seasons.

I may be an idea if we have another paint set maybe.

I already have a spare side panel and oil tank with the incorrect name on it.

Mind you I think just one thing at a time and I reckon the top end rebuild is more important, it sounds like a bag of nails.

Perhaps the change of paintwork could be a long term project.

We could run a competition to ask for designs and then do a poll on the best design. From past experience of the club that should take 2 years minimum... 8)

I am up for a design challenge!

As in if there is any competition! Otherwise I can draw up some stuff...

Start drawing.

One idea I had was the sppedlocks like the D on the lower of the tank then the stripe like the early round tank 350 A running above it .

The bike would then have graphics and a style to match models thru the range

To be honest theres nothing wrong with the paint job on Project X at the moment and to change to after just two seasons, I think is a bit of a waste especialy as so much time and money went into this paint job.

Plus we are spending this years budget on the 350CC conversion so there will be no DVLA dating money available to fund this paint job.

We dont ever use club funds for Project X funding as not every club member wants a club bike.
The money comes from the profit I make from the DVLA dating certifcates.

So if we are having a fresh paint job then the funding will need to be in place before we go any further.

Fair point Dave
The build money and parts/labour for Project X came from members and trade members etc and thats how the whole project was financed from start to finish.

The running costs and the 350cc conversion and future running cost all come from the DVLA dating money as agreed at the 2011 AGM.

Apart from 2012 road tax that Fizzydog donated.

Theres still some good offers of parts coming foward including a set of barrels from yourself and Moist has donated a set of 350 heads as well.

Its all appreciated to keep the bike in good order and on the road.

I think i have a spare set of 350 carbs if needed. As a point of interest, would you use a 400 oil pump?

The plan is to use the RD350A/B oil pump.

How about speedblocks with each block one of the range of colours, all on .....Competition Yellow 8)

(Might work on pearl white as well)

I like Super Dels earlier idea for the paint scheme, a paint pictorial of the RD range , would look great if done well, with competition yellow featuring naturally, it is a Yamaha.

I cant offer parts or services to the club bike cause but happy to chip in the folding stuff for running expenses etc, if someone can advise on how best to get the money to right man ?

There is still a project X fund running and donations can be paid into the clubs paypal account.

The address is payments@aircooledrdclub.co.uk

Rememer, this is a club bike so if anyone has an idea for the bike dont be shy, just do it.
I wanted the 350CC conversion so with the help of others on here I did it.
If you want a double front brake disc or paint job etc then say and we will try to sort it.
Im sure we would all help out but just having the idea is not enough, we also need labour and parts.

For this years 350cc conversion I bought the parts at Stafford, got a good deal from Norbo for the rebore and new parts, asked members for other parts I needed and roped RDnuts into helping me do the work and its all been completed over this winter.

Then when it was finished I claimed the money back from the project X funding account.

And stiffer forks! Bit of heavy weight oil and a little spacer should do the trick.
Enjoy riding it Ian  :)
