Hi, if you recall  I started a post about a rd350b I brought which had a connection to the Scottish tank regiment. The frame number on that was 521 0009** . I won't mention the rest as it's not mine anymore but was recently on eBay and I think he's a club member.

Mr 5port is right about original carbs working on original setting on original bikes.The only problem is that was 40 years ago.Fast forward 40 years of careful owners the fact we now use different fuels and oils and have 40 years of wear and tear.As i have said many times before ::) treat original settings as a guide and starting point but do not take as gospel. The good thing about having information from a friendly yamaha dealer. Is that even fully re-built bikes do not give out the claimed figures put out by yamaha ::) ::). I am no expert on carbs, but after consultation with my friendly ocd engineer. I am told that the 360 bowls will not work on 522 carbs as they do not have the necessary drillings and castings to match, so you will need to refit original bowls :)

You can get a full set of Allens for your engine, or even for  your entire bike off eBay but I would avoid that. The cost per bolt is crazy. Try a local place and get a mix pack of them, cheap as chips! OK OK chips aren't that cheap these days but you know what I mean...

If you can, try and use the standard exhaust. I bought a pattern one for my 18N model and it wrecks the performance. They are a lot shorter and less restrictive. Playing with the jetting might improve things, but original is best.

Thanks very much guys, all very useful and helpful. Knowing the lights don't work unless it runs saved a lot of head scratching ;D

Some good suggestions for the screws if they don't co-operate, I have the engine sideways on blocks and pour some penetrating oil down the screw caps every day. I wonder if I can get Allen bolts long enough to replace what I'm sure will be ruined screws by the time I finish?

The barrel is very rusty, I've taken a chance on a Malaysian pattern one with piston, £50 all in, see how it goes, I'll try and save the original barrel and get replacement piston for it as back up, I'll report back on progress.

I'll look out for an RSX side stand, or maybe a visit to a breakers and cut one  down or something, its been down the road on the right side, center stand is bent I think, straightened out the foot peg bar.

I did about 130,000 miles on one of those in my courier days. They were great workhorses but, like the lady said, they are a little top heavy. If you try to flick it down into a corner, the front wheel tends to leave the ground and the rider tends to land on it! (the ground, that is). :D

Quick question- I know the early orange / gold ( with the white flash ) was Virginia gold, but was it the same on the next model ( with the black pin stripe ) or were they different shades ?
